This year symposium focused on themes such as "urban development" and "academic city" and aimed to confirm the significance of collaboration between the local community and universities in revitalizing the city center and encouraging student participation in urban development. This year, the symposium was held in Kanazawa, with the theme "The Future as a Cultural City".
On the first day, after a speech of Kanazawa City Deputy Mayor Hiroyuki Shinbo, each city introduced examples of collaboration between universities, local governments, and local shopping districts under the guidance of Professor Takayuki Shinoda. Kumamoto City gave a speach about creative recovery from disasters such as the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Okayama City spoke about the redevelopment of the former prefectural office street, and a student from Okayama University introduced a multicultural exchange project being carried out by students. From Kanazawa University, three students who were involved in a collaborative project with Owari-cho Shopping District as part of Project:AERU took to the stage and reported on the history and results of the project. In addition, the Regional Revitalization Division of Kanazawa City Urban Policy Bureau and the Katamachi Shopping District Promotion Association reported on the damage and support system following the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred in January this year and the heavy rains in Oku-Noto in September, as well as presented how cities should respond to disaster support. Taking into account the unique challenges each of the three cities faces, they were able to actively exchange views on how to continue to develop as "cultural cities" and this reinstated the unity of each city.
On the second day, participants visited Ishikawa Prefectural Library and Kanazawa College of Art. They listened to various case studies, deepened their understanding of the efforts and challenges facing Kanazawa as an "academic city" and considered how to develop the city through collaboration between universities, students, government, and residents.
