On August 20, a public lecture entitled "Health Literacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" was held at Kakumachi Plaza. 20 participants ranging from high school students to those in their 70s took a part in the lecture.
First, lecturer Associate Professor Shigehiro Karashima from the Institute of Liberal Arts and Science Faculty of Global Standard Education touched on the forefront of artificial intelligence in the medical field, introducing in particular a medical AI model under development at Kanazawa University that enables disease prediction. Then he focused on the importance of health literacy, emphasizing the need for knowledge and questioning skills to identify accurate health information and apply it to one's own health care, and explained how basic skills in discerning information are critical in today's information-overloaded society.
Students commented that they were surprised by the low level of health literacy among Japanese people, and that the seminar made them think about the positive and negative aspects of generative AI, and deepened their knowledge to help them manage their own health.
